Welcome from our PresidentUpdated: 5 October 2009 The Canadian Botanical Conservation Network is a long-running effort to bring the work of the botanical gardens and arboreta of Canada in touch with other sectors nationally and internationally, and facilitated their involvement in programs like the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. That's kind of a long-winded way of saying that CBCN is here to serve Canadians through the work of our members, and to help this important group of institutions remain relevant and useful. Around the world there are now more than 2,800 botanical gardens, according to estimates by Botanic Gardens Conservation International. These institutions safeguard more than 80,000 species in their collections, a substantial percentage of the 350,000 or so species of higher plants alive today. In addition to their conservation role, botanical gardens are key educational institutions, both on the formal and informal fronts. More than 4,000,000 Canadians visit botanical gardens every year, presenting these institutions with a wonderful opportunity to make contact and spread the word about the importance of plants. Since 1995, CBCN has contributed to these institutions in a variety of ways, from providing information and arranging meetings to participating in grants and externally funded programs. We will continue to seek new ways to be relevant and bring support to our sector across Canada and around the world. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to help with this effort, or would like more information. with best wishes,
Dr. David A. Galbraith, President |
