7A - Ethics in Sourcing Plants

Speaker: Graham Buck

This talk covers the planning phase of the landscaping project including the sourcing and provenance of the plants, creating a plant list and gardening with rare plants. Sourcing of native plants is an important facet of the landscaping plan with many factors to consider when making a decision. This includes the distance from the planting site, natural origin of planting material, wild sourced or cultivar, to name a few. Akin to sourcing is the deciding on the species list for the native planting. However, since the term native is sometimes applied any plant of North American origin it can be hard to know what is naturally found in a particular region. Rarity of a plant species is another important factor when deciding on a plant list, and this talk will address ways that growing native plants can help and harm plant populations.
