11A Keynote: Sustainable Horticulture: Connecting Living Plants to Liveable Communities

Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Sumner

The word sustainable is often divided into environmental, social and economic aspects. This means that when we talk about sustainable horticulture, we need to understand it not only from the environmental perspective, but also from the social and economic perspectives.

This paper will explore what connects living plants to liveable communities using a basic understanding of sustainability as the civil commons - co-operative human constructions that protect and/or enable universal access to life goods. The Kyoto Agreement, Toronto's Greenbelt, bylaws banning the cosmetic use of pesticides, municipal parks, community gardens, organic school lunch programs, fair trade and farmers' markets are all examples of the civil commons in action that express the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability. They are also the foundation of liveable communities and, in this way, offer an expanded role for horticulture in the 21st Century.
