12B Water - More Than Just Your Backyard Pond

Tÿs Theÿsmeÿer - Head of Conservation, Royal Botanical Gardens

Backyard ponds have the potential to be extremely valuable in support of both regional biodiversity and water management. The context for this is based in historical land use changes in southern Ontario where marginal water bodies (wetlands) were filled and dredged, breaking ecological linkages and reducing the landcape's ability to attenuate floodwaters. As an example, around Lake Ontario over 80% of the wetlands have been lost and very few aquatic systems remain functional. The relevance of the value of the backyard pond is magnified by the fact that private land owners are more likely to ensure private ponds have clean water when compared to public rivers or lakes. The result is environmental systems, particularly those linkages associated with amphibians and migratory birds, can be substantially improved with an appropriately designed backyard pond.
