9B1 The
Application of Horticultural Technologies in Urban Agriculture Practices
Biography:
Dr. Youbin Zheng
is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Guelph. He has many
years of experience in horticulture research, especially in vegetable
and ornamental plant production in controlled environments (e.g.
greenhouse) in Canada, England, Japan and China. Recent research
projects include greenroofs; urban agriculture; organic vegetable
production in greenhouses; worm casting and its application; using
fly larvae to convert organic waste into value-added growing
substrate and fertilizer; irrigation and water treatment for
sustainable horticulture; and the development of sustainable plant
production systems.
Abstract:
The Application
of Horticultural Technologies in Urban Agriculture Practices
Dr. Zheng will
share thoughts on how to apply horticultural technologies in urban
agriculture production and make the process productive, fun and
sustainable. The talk will include, but is not limited to, the
following: 1) Using worm casting technology to turn organic waste
into nutrient- and microbial-rich organic material for plant
production; 2) Using hydroponic systems for plant production in urban
settings; 3) Choosing diverse plant species and arranging them in a
way that you can have both food production and a beautiful garden;
and 4) Applying modern solar greenhouse technology in urban food
production. Some common technical pitfalls in plant production and
how to avoid them will be outlined. |
