Speaker Event: 40 Days & 40 Hikes
Event Description
40 Days & 40 Hikes: Loving the Bruce Trail One Loop at a Time
Best known for her celebrated series of Loops & Lattes hiking guides, environmentalist, author and hiker, Nicola Ross has once again taken her passion for nature on the trail. The result: Her latest book, 40 Days & 40 Hikes: Loving the Bruce Trail One Loop at a Time (published by ECW Press in Toronto).
In 2022, Ross walked her own looping, 950- kilomentre journey along this much-loved trail. The result, according to one critic, is “an exquisitely wrought song of love for the Bruce Trail …a celebration that Ross infuses with new life in this remarkable book.“

About the Speaker
In her presentation, Ross recounts her journey, reflecting on the weight of history, geography and family in a parlous world. She questions her role in protecting the Niagara Escarpment, the limestone scarp the Bruce Trail follows. Do I love the escarpment enough, she wonders? What can I do to protect it? Despite the weight of her questions, Ross practically dances along the trail during her 40 days of courtship through the landscape she believes is part of her DNA. As she nears the trail’s end in Tobermory, Ross recognizes the important role the Bruce Trail plays in protecting the Niagara Escarpment. She realizes that what is important is not how much she loves the landscape, but what she does about protecting it.
Ross’s latest opus, 40 Days & 40 Hikes, the critic continues, “is indispensable and more — [it’s] an environmental activist’s cogent and often moving reflections. Join Ross as she presents exquisite images of the Niagara Escarpment and makes known how important our role is in protecting the landscape so many of us adore.
